Georgia State Campus Shooting Leaves 1 Dead, 1 Injured
(TNS) – One person was killed and another was injured after an argument led to gunfire early Friday morning on Georgia State University’s campus in downtown Atlanta, according to Channel 2 Action News.
Atlanta police told the news station that they were called to an area in front of an administrative building on Piedmont Avenue between Courtland Street and John Wesley Dobbs Avenue around 1 a.m. When they got there, they found two men with gunshot wounds. Neither of them were students, police told Channel 2.
The victims were rushed to Grady Memorial Hospital, the news station reported, where one of them died. The second victim was described as stable.
Police told Channel 2 that three people were fighting when things escalated to gunfire. One man was detained at the scene, but it’s not clear if he is considered a suspect.
No other details have been released by police.
There have been a number of recent shootings on or near the downtown campus.
On the afternoon of Oct. 31, a man was shot to death at the Georgia State MARTA station on Piedmont Avenue.
Two days before that, on Oct. 29, four people were shot near the GSU campus, including two students who were injured and a 19-year-old woman who died. That shooting prompted the university’s leaders to discuss plans to add more security measures on the campus.
In March, a shooting outside a student housing building near campus prompted a police investigation. Witnesses saw people in two vehicles shooting into the air as they left the area. No injuries were reported.
In December 2022, 24-year-old GSU student Joshua Igbinijesu was fatally shot at a gas station near campus. Shortly after the shooting, GSU issued a campus-wide alert warning students to stay clear of the area while police were on the scene, and the following day announced they had determined that it was a ”targeted incident.”
