Rain Puts York County in Flood Watch. Here’s What to Know

Read Time:1 Minute, 47 Second

(TNS) -The York County Office of Emergency Management tweeted that York County is in a flood watch through midnight.

York and Chester counties are among 13 South Carolina counties under the flood watch. All or part of 24 connected North Carolina counties, including Mecklenburg County , and six Georgia counties are involved.

Rock Hill  region commuters will deal with wet roads. But it won’t be bad everywhere.

The National Weather Service office out of Greenville – Spartanburg notes another inch of rain is expected across that flood watch area. Some areas could see closer to two inches today. River and flash flooding are possibilities, particularly during afternoon and evening hours.

Heavy rains throughout the week already have caused issues. Wilson Chapel Road in Sharon closed yesterday in both directions due to flooding at a creek crossing.

Flooding along larger water bodies like Lake Wylie is uncommon, since Duke Energy can run water in conjunction with other Catawba River reservoirs to even out levels in given spots. As of 9 a.m. Thursday , Lake Wylie had more than two feet of water storage remaining. Except for Lake Wateree , all 11 Catawba reservoirs were above their target marks Thursday morning but only Lake Dearborn in Great Falls was within a foot of its full pond mark.

Duke, which manages the Catawba and its reservoirs, posted public safety messages for its lakes on Wednesday morning. The Lake Wylie notice, in part, reads:

“Lake Wylie is higher than normal due to recent rainfall. Additional periods of rain, combined with saturated soils, will result in high river and lake levels. Duke Energy is moving water through the river system. Please pay close attention to changing weather conditions and take any necessary precautions.”
