Lexington, Ky., to Activate Heat Plan Ahead of Heat Wave
(TNS) – The city of Lexington will activate phase one of its heat plan on Tuesday ahead of a weeklong heat wave, according to Lexington Emergency Management.
The plan will be in effect until Friday, according to the city’s office of emergency management. The National Weather Service’s seven-day forecast for Lexington predicts temperatures will climb into the 90s every day during the week before cooling down into the high 80s during the weekend.
As part of the heat plan:
- Lexington’s community centers, including Dunbar, Kenwick, Castlewood and Tates Creek, will serve as cooling stations.
- LexTran will provide free rides to cooling stations for people who are homeless.
- Outreach teams will distribute water throughout the community.
- City waste collection will begin early, with commercial services at 3:30 a.m. and residential services at 4:30 a.m.
NWS forecasters said it’s possible the area will see triple-digit heat indexes on Wednesday and Thursday. Friday brings a chance of rain before the cooldown.
