Southwest Atlanta Chemical Spill Snarls Traffic for Hours
(TNS) — All northbound lanes on I-285 in southwest Atlanta were blocked for hours due to a chemical on the road surface.
Delays were building since around 3 p.m. when officials first reported “debris” on the interstate before Langford Parkway, according to the Georgia Department of Transportation. Atlanta fire officials later confirmed it was 200 gallons of sulfuric acid.
Contractors were called to the scene to clean up the spill, according to the Atlanta Fulton-County Emergency Management Agency. The agency said that after the spill has been cleared, the road will have to be assessed. Lanes reopened just before 2 a.m.
According to Channel 2 Action News, two department of transportation HERO workers were injured and taken to a hospital. The extent of their injuries were not clear.
